Description

A lone scout stands at a fork where three pine‑lined roads diverge, each leading to a different Carver village. Torn between his orders to wait for the enemy and a personal longing for the summer home of Beatrice Farrar, he wrestles with the classic pull of love versus duty. To break the deadlock he lets fate decide, spinning the punctured front wheel of his bicycle like a makeshift roulette.

The wheel lands twice toward Middleboro, a warning he interprets, and just as he prepares a third spin a boy in a white‑apron wagon bursts onto the path, shouting about pies and pastries from Wareham. The scout seizes the moment, using the cart as cover and pressing his rifle forward, aware that any misstep could draw enemy fire. This tense encounter propels him onto a covert path that will test his courage, his loyalties, and the secret that still haunts his heart.
