The play opens in a modest parsonage by the frozen Kontojärvi, where the heat of a large oven struggles against the endless snow outside. Inside, the pastor Martinus Olaus, his wife, and the housekeeper Kaarina exchange weary banter as they prepare for the day's duties, while a chorus of villagers—farmers, singers, servants—buzzes through the room. The stage is filled with wooden tables stacked with heavy tomes, religious icons, and the ever‑present scent of pine smoke, setting a vivid, rural Finnish backdrop.
Amid the routine, whispers of Panu, a wandering sage reputed to cure ailments with strange charms, begin to surface. Kaarina recounts a recent miracle—how the healer supposedly saved a sick woman from a relentless fever—sparking both awe and suspicion among the clergy and townsfolk. Pastor Martinus, protective of his authority, confronts the rumors, while the community hangs on the possibility of a miracle in the harsh winter. The tension between faith, superstition, and desperation drives the first act, promising a compelling clash of belief and tradition.
