Description

The narrator begins his tale as a second‑mate on a Newfoundland steamboat, spurred by news of the war to enlist despite missing his home regiment. After a restless journey through Halifax and Sydney he finds a place with the newly formed 25th Battalion, a group of Nova Scotian volunteers whose pride and humor shine through the early drills and long voyages across the Atlantic. Their arrival in England brings hard training, tight bonds, and a growing confidence that turns ordinary men into a disciplined fighting unit.

Once the battalion lands in France, the author records the everyday realities of trench life, the rattling of machine‑gun positions, and the shared longing for home that steadies them amid the shell‑swept hills of Vimy Ridge. He paints vivid scenes of camaraderie in the mud, the quiet moments before an assault, and the steady march of men who believe they are part of something larger than themselves. The memoir offers listeners a personal window onto the hopes, hardships, and gritty determination that defined the Twenty‑Fifth’s early combat experience.
