Orlando begins in Elizabethan England with a young nobleman who writes poetry, loses his heart to a Russian princess during the Great Frost, and goes to Constantinople as ambassador. There he falls into a week-long sleep and wakes up a woman. Orlando then lives on for more than three hundred years, through the wits of the eighteenth century and the damp of the Victorian age, until the story ends at midnight in October 1928. Virginia Woolf wrote it as a playful mock biography of her friend Vita Sackville-West, and it is the lightest and funniest of her novels.
We chose Orlando because it is one of Woolf's best books and still has very few audio editions. You can listen to and share this Listenly audio version for free. It includes Woolf's preface and all six chapters; the photographs and portraits from the first edition are left out. The text comes from Standard Ebooks, and Listenly is not affiliated with that project.

A leading voice of literary modernism, she changed the shape of the novel with flowing, intimate prose that follows thought as it happens. Her work also gave lasting force to questions about art, memory, and women's freedom to write.
