Description

In a picturesque village where the doctor's house dominates the landscape, Mrs. Fereday moves into the lovingly rebuilt Steynes‑Cote with hopes of preserving her genteel comforts. Though childless, she pours affection into the community, especially the local children, whose illnesses become opportunities for her tender kindness. Her life revolves around a harmonious, if sometimes amusing, domestic routine alongside a husband who can spend an hour simply savoring breakfast and the newspaper.

Amid the gentle humor of daily chores and the doctor's habit of drifting into irrelevant conversations, an unexpected bond forms with a small pensioner who cherishes his “poor” state for the care it brings. As the couple navigates the quiet rhythms of village life, a subtle yearning for a deeper connection begins to stir, hinting at the possibility of an unconventional family that could reshape their world.
