In the pines of the Northwest, Bill Goodrich settles into a solitary camp, expecting his hunting partner to appear with a load of tobacco and provisions. When a lone traveler arrives on a heavily‑laden burro, Goodrich offers coffee and shares a modest meal, the two men swapping stories and a sack of pipe tobacco. The night passes quietly, each man setting down his blankets before drifting to sleep beneath a sky full of stars.
The dawn brings a bewildering discovery: Goodrich’s coat, his mule, and his trusted rifle have vanished, replaced by a newer gun, a different animal, and a fresh Stetson hat. The only clue to the mysterious exchange is a sack of tobacco and a bundle of papers left in his lap. As he prepares to head out on the ridge, the odd trade hints at a larger, unseen force that may shape the days to come.
