Description

Mrs. Everswell’s elegant drawing‑room in Mayfair is filled with glittering guests, polished silver, and the easy chatter of society, yet beneath the sparkle the household teeters on the brink of ruin. Her daughter Barbara, a striking nineteen‑year‑old, watches the scene from a hidden alcove, her thoughts far from the opulent décor. Though her mother hopes a match with the wealthy, elderly Lord Selwyn will rescue them, Barbara’s heart belongs to someone far less affluent—a young barrister named Dick, whose modest prospects cannot ease the family’s mounting debts.

As the evening unfolds, whispered rumors about Mrs. Everswell’s finances ripple through the crowd, and Barbara’s secret resolve to marry for love rather than money sets the stage for conflict. With suitors circling and the pressure of looming creditors mounting, the young woman must decide whether to follow her heart or sacrifice it to save her mother’s reputation. The tension between duty, desire, and desperation promises a tale of passion and intrigue that will keep listeners on edge.
