Description

A bustling London household prepares for the wedding of the charismatic yet impulsive Desmond, a man whose reputation for charm is matched only by his history of youthful indiscretions. His mother, confident in his good looks but wary of his weakness for temptation, watches the arrangements with a mixture of pride and anxiety, while his sister Maud navigates the tension between admiration and irritation. Their conversations reveal a family caught between societal expectations and the unpredictable nature of love.

The bride, a modest country clergyman’s daughter, remains largely unseen, her innocence and lack of worldly experience becoming the focal point of speculation. As guests gather, the novel gently probes the contrasting worlds of aristocratic ambition and provincial virtue, hinting at the challenges that await the newlyweds. Listeners are invited to witness the delicate balance of hope, doubt, and familial dynamics that set the stage for a marriage that may yet test the limits of character and devotion.
