Description

In a remote valley of the Sutlej, a young girl named Lispeth navigates the uneasy overlap of tradition and missionary influence. Born to the hill people of Kotgarh, she watches the ravages of famine and cholera before embracing Christianity, receiving a new name that blends her heritage with the language of the chaplain’s school. Her striking beauty—fair as ivory, tall as a Roman huntress—draws admiration and envy alike, making her a living symbol of the cultural crossroads that surround her.

Now living under the roof of the chaplain’s family, Lispeth balances duties as a servant‑companion with a deepening education in the Bible and Western literature. Though her fellow hillfolk scorn her for adopting foreign customs, she remains content, wandering the rugged hills on long, solitary walks. When she rescues an injured traveler and daringly proposes marriage, her boldness both unsettles her benefactors and hints at a future where personal desire may clash with the expectations of the world she now inhabits.
