Nora seeks refuge from her private troubles in the duties of estate life, visiting villagers and discovering how warmly they remember Henry, the man who has been driven away. As she examines his papers, plans, and careful notes, her opinion of him rises: beneath his imperfections she finds industry, sound judgment, and a sincere concern for the people in her care.
