Guy Maynard, a young officer of the Terran Space Patrol, is out for a routine walk at the heavily guarded Sahara Base when a Martian steps into his path, weapon trained on his midsection. The encounter is startling not just for its violence but for its sheer improbability—Martians are supposed to be far away, not strolling the corridors of a desert outpost. As the alien’s flat, metallic voice orders him to come along, invisible tractor beams yank the pair into the void, thrusting Maynard into an unseen spacecraft.

Inside the alien vessel, Maynard is restrained and taken to a stark surgical bay, where the Martian—who introduces himself as Kregon—offers a cryptic proposition. The officer’s training and quick thinking have saved him before, but now he must decide whether to trust the stranger’s motives or resist a plot that could reshape human‑Martian relations.
