Terran officers watch the Svants approach, carrying a twelve‑foot long tube that sounds like a horn when blown, sparking debate among the Marines about whether it’s a weapon or a ceremonial instrument. At the center of the uneasy first contact is Paul Meillard, whose career hinges on forging a treaty that would allow settlement while respecting the alien society’s rights. Failure would relegate him to a mundane bureaucratic post, while success could make him governor of the new colony.
The narrative probes how sound and communication shape first contact, turning simple noises into clues about intent. Listeners will feel the tension as both sides struggle to understand each other.
