Chapter VI Our Indebtedness to White Women
Born in the Tswana lands near Mafeking, the author rose from a modest upbringing to become one of the most accomplished Black South Africans of his generation. After a rigorous education under a German Lutheran missionary, he entered the postal service at sixteen and soon out‑performed his white colleagues in the highest colonial clerical exams. During the siege of Mafeking he served as the crucial interpreter between British officials and the town’s African population, a role that forged his intimate knowledge of both cultures. Later, he turned to journalism, editing Tswana newspapers in Mafeking and Kimberley, and sharpened the wit and linguistic flair that would define his writing.
In this detailed memoir he turns his eye to the 1913 Natives’ Land Act, describing how sweeping legal restrictions turned fertile ancestral fields into barren reserves and forced countless families into poverty. Written as a plea to a sympathetic British public, the work blends personal observation with stark social analysis, offering a vivid snapshot of early‑twentieth‑century life under an emerging segregationist regime. It stands as both a powerful protest and a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in South African history.
