APPENDIX B.
Set against the wild, uncharted shores of early nineteenth‑century Australia, this narrative follows a Royal Navy captain and his crew as they painstakingly chart a coastline that stretches from the tropical reefs of Torres Strait down to the windswept bays of the southwest. Their journal records the daily challenges of navigating treacherous reefs, anchoring amid fierce tides, and repairing a vessel that loses its anchors more than once. Along the way they document towering cliffs, coral‑loving sting‑rays, and abundant mangroves, while sketching the flora and fauna that would soon intrigue naturalists back in Europe.
The account also offers vivid, respectful glimpses of the Indigenous peoples they encounter: exchanges of language, tools, and food, as well as moments of tension that reveal the complexities of first contact. Interwoven with meticulous hydrographic data, weather observations, and geological notes, the work provides a rich mosaic of exploration, science, and human interaction that brings the early Australian frontier to life for modern listeners.

An early Australian-born naval explorer, he helped chart large stretches of Australia’s coast and later took part in the famous surveying voyage of HMS Adventure and HMS Beagle. His work blended seamanship, science, and exploration at a time when much of the southern world was still being mapped.
