CHAPTER X - I WAKE A SLEEPER
The May sun glints on the shore of Michillimackinac as Armand de Montlivet strides along the sand, fresh from a grueling river crossing with his men. He pauses, breathing the sweet spring air, his mind turning toward the beaver lands farther west, feeling a rare contentment in his solitary wanderings. Though he is a stranger to this French outpost, the quiet moment lets his thoughts expand, imagining the possibilities that lie ahead.
His reverie is shattered when the commandant, Cadillac, strides toward him, the very symbol of France’s power in the region. A sharp exchange of words about swagger and ambition flashes between them, each trying to claim the other's respect while hinting at deeper motives. Montlivet’s quick apology and the commandant’s lingering sarcasm reveal a complex dance of pride, opportunity, and the promise of a “key to an empire.” Their encounter leaves the explorer poised on the brink of a larger, uncertain venture.
