Description

Monica finds herself alone in her elegant London home while her husband, Randolph, is away on business. He has urged her to leave the house and join society, so she reluctantly accepts a series of rides, teas, and gatherings arranged by the vivacious Mrs. Bellamy. Each encounter—whether with the cheerful Cecilia, the polite yet presumptuous Conrad, or other fashionable acquaintances—leaves Monica feeling both obliged and increasingly unsettled.

The novel paints a vivid portrait of late‑Victorian etiquette, where polite conversation often masks personal desire and duty. As Monica navigates these social currents, she begins to question the sincerity of those around her and wonders what freedoms lie beyond the endless invitations. The gentle humor and keen observation make her reluctant journey into society both entertaining and thought‑provoking.
