I. THE OLD TAVERN AT BAYLEY'S FOUR CORNERS.
II. THE CASE OF SILAS JAFFREY.
At a forgotten crossroads in the New Hampshire woods stands an ancient tavern, a relic of a bygone era when stagecoaches changed horses and travelers filled its rooms. Managed by the solitary Tobias Sewell, the inn has become a quiet outpost visited only by wandering drovers, a traveling circus, and the occasional curious passer‑by. Into this stillness rides a weary surveyor, his carriage stranded in a black October night, seeking shelter from the relentless rain.
The inn’s creaking doors open to a dimly lit parlor where the air smells of rum and old wood, and where the surveyor’s arrival stirs a mix of hospitality and suspicion. He soon finds himself drawn into the lives of the few permanent residents, especially the enigmatic Miss Mehetabel’s son, whose presence hints at stories untold. As the storm rages outside, the newcomer discovers that even the most isolated places can harbor unexpected connections and quiet dramas.
