Description

In the bustling streets of 1888 London, a down‑on‑his‑luck young man named Jeremiah Pamflett finds himself holed up in a cheap hotel, his mind rattled and his fortunes dwindling. An exuberant but enigmatic Captain Ablewhite bursts in with a mysterious “pick‑me‑up” and a blunt warning that a bad business is about to unfold, thrusting Jeremiah into a high‑stakes gamble that could restore his lost £2,000 or plunge him deeper into ruin. The opening sets a tense, almost frantic rhythm, as the pair argue over missed opportunities, courage, and a coveted horse‑racing tip that promises a £7,000 windfall.

Soon, the shadow of the notorious Miser Farebrother looms, his threatening presence threatening to entangle Jeremiah in a web of deceit, family secrets, and a stolen diamond bracelet. Alongside a determined sister, a bewildered fugitive, and a series of legal twists—including an inquest and a courtroom drama—the story weaves Victorian intrigue with the desperate scramble for redemption. Listeners are invited to follow Jeremiah’s frantic race against time, wondering whether bravery and a bit of luck can spare him from the dark machinations that surround him.
