Description

A winter night finds the narrator aboard a cramped train slipping south from Vienna, the snow‑laden Austrian plains giving way to the stark, moonlit peaks of the Semmering railway. Through the fog‑filled windows he watches farmers in rough woolen garb, hears the muted rustle of tobacco, and feels the pull of a landscape that feels oddly familiar to his Finnish home. The journey is both a physical climb and a quiet meditation on the sameness of people across borders, setting a tone of curiosity mixed with a touch of melancholy.

Soon the iron road opens onto the sun‑kissed hills of northern Italy, and the traveler’s senses awaken to the scent of olives and the buzz of bustling towns. He steps into the labyrinthine streets of Venice, marvels at the towering campanile of St. Peter’s, and catches a glimpse of ancient catacombs that whisper of centuries gone by. These early impressions frame a vivid portrait of Italy as a mosaic of history, art, and everyday life, inviting listeners to follow his footsteps through churches, frescoes, and the quiet corners of the Italian countryside.
