Description

In the tumult of late‑17th‑century England, a restless youth named Micah Clarke is thrust from his modest upbringing into the swirl of royal intrigue. Raised under the watchful eye of Jesuit tutors and shaped by the lingering legacy of a king’s illegitimate son, Micah finds himself drawn to the charismatic Duke of Monmouth, whose promise of Protestant liberty ignites a feverish hope among the disenfranchised. The novel opens with Micah’s uneasy departure from school, his first encounters with fellow recruits, and the uneasy camaraderie that forms among men eager for purpose.

The narrative moves from London's cramped streets to the rugged Isle of Wight, where Micah and his comrades confront the harsh realities of militia life. Doyle blends brisk action with a wry, Dumas‑like humor, painting battles as both perilous and oddly convivial. Listeners are treated to vivid portraits of colorful characters—a mysterious fisherman, a stoic priest, and a daring cavalry officer—each adding depth to Micah’s coming‑of‑age journey. The first act sets the stage for a rebellion that will test loyalty, courage, and the very notion of honor.
