On a storm‑shrouded Venus, a handful of Earth engineers cling to a remote iron mine while a nameless horror rises from the planet’s black seas. Enormous, centipede‑like creatures called centaurpedes crawl onto the land, their razor‑sharp mandibles and dexterous arms turning the mist into a battlefield. The alien menace moves like a single, relentless army, intent on starving the miners of their last foothold on the planet.
Leading the defense is MacAloon, a seasoned scout riding a massive saddle‑lizard, his uneasy fish‑like guide whispering warnings about the impossible odds. With his partner Al Birchall clutching infrared lenses that cut through the veil, they watch the wave of creatures inch forward, weighing the choice between a desperate stand and abandoning the mine that represents humanity’s only chance on Venus. Their resolve will drive a tense clash of fire, ingenuity, and raw courage against a foe that refuses to retreat.

A sharp, influential editor as well as a writer, he helped steer science fiction toward stories that cared as much about people and society as they did about gadgets and space travel. He is especially remembered for launching and shaping Galaxy Science Fiction, one of the defining magazines of the 1950s.
