In the heart of Budapest’s City Park a peculiar legend comes to life: Liliom, a chicken‑catcher with a swagger that borders on theatrical, roams the promenades and the underbelly of the city. The opening scene drops us into a sun‑dappled garden where commuters, servants and a sharp‑tongued Mrs. Muskátné spar over propriety, a mischievous carousel, and the ever‑present threat of a sudden chase. Their banter crackles with a mix of slapstick and sly social commentary, setting the tone for a story that feels both rooted in early‑ twentieth‑century urban life and delightfully absurd.
A colourful cast—maids, detectives, policemen, a captain, and a host of eccentric townsfolk—converges around Liliom’s relentless pursuit of his feathered quarry. As the characters clash over morals, money and the odd “hand‑to‑hand” encounter, the listener is drawn into a comedic mystery that teases whether Liliom’s exploits are mere hustle or something more legendary. The first act builds a vivid tableau of rivalry, humor, and the bustling spirit of a city caught between tradition and chaos.
