TABLE DES MATIÈRES
The story opens in a narrow courtyard of Juvigny, where a little girl spends her days in the modest apartment of her grandparents, the Pâquins. The house, tucked behind a hat‑maker’s shop, brims with the scent of burning coal, the chatter of a travelling troupe’s rehearsals, and the flutter of canaries in a small cage. Through the plastered walls she hears violin strings and vaudeville practice, sparking a wild imagination about the adult world of theater.
Her grandmother, a stern, meticulous woman with steel‑rimmed glasses, insists on discipline and reading, while the grandfather, a retired dragon lieutenant turned forest inspector, arrives like a burst of sunshine, his silver hair and booming laugh filling the rooms with generosity. He invites the child to explore the street, to trade the quiet of the kitchen for the bustling market, and his stories of distant forests hint at adventures beyond the cramped courtyard. The contrast between his open‑hearted kindness and her strict pragmatism shapes the narrator’s yearning for something larger than the familiar walls.
