Description

In this richly imagined medieval French work, a thoughtful narrator reflects on the vast world of sacred and secular learning, wondering how he might offer readers something both useful and new. Leaving his study, he wanders into a verdant May garden, where he encounters an impressive gathering of princesses, noblewomen, maidens, townspeople, and women of every rank, all splendidly dressed and adorned.

Among them, a wise and devout woman called Good Affection for the Honor and Salvation of Women approaches him with a manuscript. She urges him to study, arrange, and explain its contents so that women may receive not merely fashionable ornaments, but the “garments” of good conduct, dignity, and virtue. Combining allegory, moral instruction, social observation, and elaborate praise of women, the work invites listeners into a ceremonial world where clothing becomes a language for character and spiritual refinement. Its ornate prose and lively dreamlike setting offer a fascinating glimpse into early French literary culture and ideals of female honor.
