Description

A London‑built steamer, the Merilokki, has just taken on a full load of gritty cement at Northfleet, and the crew is already wrestling with the mess it leaves behind. The boatswain, a hard‑working and meticulous sailor, spends a sweltering May afternoon scrubbing the deck, the galley and even his own uniform, while a young deckhand fetches fresh water and a bar of yellow soap to aid the effort. Their routine is punctuated by the clatter of pots, the hiss of the galley stove and the occasional banter that keeps morale afloat despite the stubborn grime.

Beneath the routine, tensions simmer: the captain’s distracted wanderings, the cook’s sarcastic remarks, and a restless crew that chafes under the weight of duty. The boatswain, usually calm and efficient, finds himself increasingly irritated by the captain’s odd behavior and the crew’s lack of respect, all while a quiet affection for a fellow crew member begins to surface. As the ship prepares to set sail for the bustling waters of the English Channel, the promise of fresh horizons is shadowed by the brewing discord and the boatswain’s growing inner conflict.

1863–1943

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
