Description

Set against the stark beauty of Labrador’s icy bays, this memoir captures a spring when the winter ice finally thaws, unleashing a rush of activity on the remote fishing stations. John Mitchell, a seasoned skipper, prepares to haul firewood and timber to his summer outpost, gathering a crew of eager boys whose lives revolve around the sea. The community’s rhythm—dog‑teams on frozen waters, families waiting on the shore—draws listeners into a world where nature’s pace dictates every decision.

The boys, from ten‑year‑old Willie to fourteen‑year‑old Tom, are thrilled to join the voyage, their excitement echoing in spontaneous songs and a makeshift banquet aboard the small trap boat. As a clear sky and gentle wind guide them outward, a sudden squall appears without warning, ripping the sail and overturning the vessel. In the frantic seconds that follow, the crew finds themselves plunged into icy water, fighting to stay afloat amid floating ice and the roar of the storm.
