In the quiet countryside of Pielisjärvi, Heikki Sikanen is a solitary farmer whose life revolves around the land he tends and the traditions that shape his world. Though he has never set foot in the village school, he has raised his only son, Pekka, a man of the same steadfast character who has also avoided formal education and the expectations of the church. Their simple, hard‑won existence is threatened by a looming question of lineage, as the death of Pekka’s mother leaves the family without a clear heir.
When the widowed Kaisa inherits a modest farm after her husband’s passing, both father and son see a chance to secure the future of the Sikanen line. Yet the prospect of marriage and the required rippikoulu (confirmation school) introduces a subtle clash between personal desire, community norms, and the weight of ancestral duty. As autumn settles over the fields, the Sikanens must decide whether to embrace change or cling to the familiar rhythms of their rural life.
