In a cramped, dimly lit chamber the air trembles with the scent of medicine and the muffled rattling of glass candleholders. A frail mother lies on a thin quilt, her body reduced to a porcelain figurine, while her daughter Anni tends her with trembling hands, dabbing away cold sweat. Outside, the wan winter sun has slipped away, leaving only a feeble lantern that throws ghostly reflections across the walls. The room feels like a sealed cell, yet every breath seems to echo with a desperate yearning for something sweeter.
Erkki, the son's observer, watches the scene with a mixture of helplessness and reverence, his thoughts drifting between the mother’s past as the daughter of a prosperous merchant and her present, reduced to cravings for exotic fruits—dates, melons, even the mysterious ‘Crimean nuts.’ Those fleeting desires illuminate a deeper longing for a lost life of abundance, clashing with the stark poverty of their rural existence. As Anni strives to satisfy these impossible wishes, the narrative folds into a subtle critique of social decline, familial duty, and the thin line between care and desperation.
