On a windswept shore of Aluenjärvi, the dead are gathered for a strange ceremony, and the ancient king Lemmes of Karelia faces a restless fate. Beside him stands Turo, a wizened seer whose cryptic verses speak of twin forces of light and darkness battling for the people. The dialogue shifts to a prophecy about a child marked by thunder and a pure maiden whose sacrifice might free the land. Leino’s language weaves together gods, storms, and the yearning of a nation in a lyrical, almost chant‑like rhythm.
Tarja, Turo’s wife, challenges the sage’s plans, while the fierce warlord Sorjo and the young daughter Helka watch the tension rise. Their conversations reveal a clash between personal love and communal duty, as each character weighs the cost of offering an innocent soul to the gods. The first act builds a mythic atmosphere that feels both timeless and rooted in the Finnish landscape, drawing the listener into a world of prophecy, power, and yearning.
