Description

In a rain‑soaked alley of the modest market town of Norton Bury, a young girl watches a sturdy, mud‑caked boy seek shelter beside her carriage. His fierce eyes and solid build contrast sharply with her own delicate frame, and even the brief exchange hints at a depth of character uncommon in someone so young. The scene is painted with vivid details—the bustling high street, the looming abbey tower, the clatter of loom‑workers—setting a world where hard work and dignity are already at stake.

Through the narrator’s eyes we glimpse a family striving to protect its fragile member while juggling the responsibilities of a growing business. The stranger’s quiet resolve and the narrator’s fascination with him lay the groundwork for a friendship that will test notions of class, ambition, and integrity. As the storm passes, both children are left to wonder what futures their differing strengths might forge in a society where perseverance often outweighs birthright.
