CHAPTER IX.CLANCY’S COLT.
Ballingoole once glittered as a miniature English village, its sprawling estates and manicured gardens a showcase for retired officers, wealthy widows and even a baronet. Over the decades the stately homes have slipped into tenements, empty windows stare out over a tired canal, and the grand whist parties have become distant memories. The town now wears a patchwork of crumbling mansions turned shops, modest cottages and mud‑huts, yet its streets still whisper of a time when aristocratic pride ruled the hills.
Amid this slow decay live two contrasting ladies: Mrs. Finny, a doctor’s widow with a modest income, and Miss Dopping, a seventy‑year‑old eccentric who inherits a comfortable fortune but dresses in shabby, gaunt finery. Their daily walks past rusted gates and overgrown avenues set the stage for quiet gossip, lingering resentments and the peculiar charms of a community clinging to faded glory. As November light tinges the hedges, the listeners are drawn into the subtle drama of a town where the past refuses to fade without a fight.
