Part 1
A weary survivor stumbles out of a suffocating cave, clutching a trembling terrier and the faint glow of daylight that seems almost foreign after days of darkness. The world he once knew has been stripped to silent hills and empty fields, and the simple act of breathing fresh air feels like a miracle. As he steadies himself on the ridge, the contrast between the barren landscape and the lingering memory of bustling cities becomes starkly apparent.
He reflects on a lifetime scarred by war, the roar of traffic, and the hollow promises of modern comforts, only to discover a renewed reverence for the quiet growth of the earth beneath his feet. Yet, an unnameable unease lingers, hinted at by his dog’s sudden, plaintive whimper. The story follows his tentative steps toward a highway that should be alive with traffic, but where an eerie hush suggests that something far larger than his personal struggle may be waiting just beyond the horizon.

A mid-century writer and editor with one foot in science fiction and the other in history, he published inventive magazine stories and later gathered some of them in a collection of fantastic tales. His work has the feel of classic pulp-era speculation, but with an editor’s eye for shape and pacing.
