IN THE SHADOW OF THE GLEN - A PLAY IN ONE ACT - By J. M. Synge - First performed at the Molesworth Hall, Dublin, October 8th, 1903.
In a remote cottage perched at the head of a Wicklow glen, a storm‑battered night finds Nora Burke alone with the body of her husband still lying on the low wooden table. The wind whistles through the hills while the hearth sputters, and a weary tramp, seeking shelter, steps through the doorway. Their uneasy meeting quickly turns into a strange ritual of hospitality: whisky, pipe tobacco, and a quiet exchange about curses and the odd habits of the deceased farmer.
Synge’s one‑act play captures the raw, earthy dialogue of rural Ireland, letting each character’s words reveal a mix of superstition, loneliness and dark humor. Nora’s pragmatic kindness clashes with the tramp’s weary, world‑weary perspective, while the dead husband’s lingering presence haunts the room. Listeners are drawn into the intimate, almost theatrical hush of a community on the edge of modernity, feeling the cold stone of the glen and the warmth of unexpected companionship.

A central voice of the Irish Literary Revival, this playwright, poet, and folklorist turned the speech and stories of the west of Ireland into some of the most vivid drama of his time. Best known for The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea, he wrote work that still feels musical, earthy, and startlingly alive.
