In the Klondyke : including an account of a winter's journey to Dawson

He resolves to head eastward on his own, hauling sleds across ice‑fields that stretch six hundred miles toward Dawson.

In the bustling frontier town he encounters Jack Beltz, a rugged frontiersman with a reputation for dog‑driving. Beltz brings five sturdy huskies—descendants of native Indian dogs and wild wolves—ready to pull through the deepest drifts. Together they catalogue supplies, trimming weight to the bare minimum while making sure the dogs receive enough sustenance for the relentless cold.

With sleds loaded and the wilderness ahead, the pair set off from the Miner’s Rest, bracing against blizzards and frozen rivers. The early leg of their journey tests endurance, camaraderie, and the thin line between daring adventure and sheer survival.
