Description

A brooding August evening rolls in over a windswept coastline, where the sea’s roar and an approaching storm set the stage for a solitary walk. Lionel Dering, a determined young man, makes his way along a cliff path that few would dare to tread after dark, his thoughts fixed on the elusive Edith West. The landscape is both beautiful and treacherous, with lightning flashing over crumbling cliffs and a lone lighthouse looming in the distance. As night deepens, his familiar route becomes a test of memory and resolve.

The novel opens with that tense pilgrimage, hinting at secrets buried in the cliffs and the promise of a friendship that may change Lionel’s fate. Early encounters with a wary boatman and the looming storm suggest forces—both natural and human—that will challenge his resolve. Listeners are drawn into a world of quiet desperation, romance, and the looming mystery of a midnight intruder. The atmospheric prose sets a tone of suspense that promises more revelations as the story unfolds.
