Description

This lyrical sequence of six sonnets follows the slow retreat of summer into autumn, where scarlet leaves, grey skies, and a grieving wind transform the landscape into a meditation on mortality. As the year appears to fade, the speaker is drawn into a radiant dream garden by the sea, a place of roses, birdsong, love, and enduring beauty.

Within that dream, legendary lovers and heroic figures pass like figures in a pageant, summoned from myth and memory. Their stories deepen the poem’s central questions: what can love preserve, what must be surrendered, and how can beauty survive the approach of death? When the dream dissolves and the speaker returns to a barren autumn world, the season has acquired a new, mysterious grace—sanctified by remembrance and by the possibility that loss itself may reveal what is most beautiful.
