Image of the Gods
On the wind‑scarred plains of Baron IV, a hardy colony has just finished a record harvest of taaro, their staple grain, just as the first winter storms begin to gather. The settlers have spent years building windbreaks and heat‑furnaces to survive the planet’s brutal season, and life has settled into a rhythm of toil and cautious optimism. Then, against all expectations, a ship from Earth touches down far earlier than any schedule ever allowed, its sudden appearance stirring both hope and unease.
Pete Farnam, a seasoned farmer, is the first to meet the newcomers, his tar‑sprayer still clogged and his mind full of questions about the mysterious arrival. Together with his friend Mario and a handful of curious native Dusties—small, fur‑covered creatures that cling to the colony’s daily life—Pete confronts the strange timing and wonders what news, if any, the ship brings from a distant home he barely remembers. Their conversations blend practical concerns about the looming winter with whispered rumors about Earth, hinting at larger mysteries waiting to unfold.
