Miili, a young maid who has just lost her position in a cramped Helsinki household, finds herself locked out of the only world she has ever known. The sudden humiliation of being seen by the house’s mistress and the angry overseer leaves her trembling on the stairwell, her thoughts a storm of shame and fury. With no relatives or friends in the city, she drifts through the bustling streets, guided only by the lingering scent of market stalls and the distant echo of a childhood home in Häme.
In her aimless wandering she bumps into Mirtsa, a former farm girl turned fashionable city dweller, whose carefree laugh and vivid stories of a seaside “island town” offer a brief respite from Miili’s disorientation. Their tentative conversation hints at hidden connections and unspoken dangers lurking behind the glittering façades of the city’s elite. As Miili struggles to decide whether to follow this new acquaintance or continue alone, the novel captures the fragile hope and lingering dread of a woman on the brink of a new, uncertain life.
