A weary emperor, recently humbled by a bitter clash with the papacy, retreats to his modest stronghold with wife Berta and their young son. The strained peace of his domestic life offers little respite, and he cannot ignore the urgent need to reclaim his shattered authority. Surrounded by dissenting nobles and a hostile clergy, he must weigh the humiliation of papal penance against the risk of being forever branded a rebel.

Accompanied only by his faithful companion Baccelardo and a handful of gaunt horses, the small party braves the treacherous Alpine passes, hoping to rally remnants of loyalty among distant kin. Their journey is marked by scarcity, uneasy hospitality, and the occasional generosity of relatives such as the benevolent Count William, who shelters them at Besançon and supplies scarce provisions. Amid these hardships, the emperor’s resolve hardens, setting the stage for a peril‑laden march toward a fragile restoration.
