A thin, rag‑clad boy stumbles through a snow‑laden London night, his only companion a trembling white rabbit locked in a wooden cage. Dressed in a short velvet coat, red waistcoat and knee‑length trousers, he drags nine pennies he must deliver home each evening, while hunger gnaws at his resolve. As the wind whips through the dark alleys of Soho, he slips past laughing boys and watchful constables, hoping to escape their ridicule.
The bitter cold forces him deeper into the labyrinth of shuttered bakeries and flickering shop windows, where the glow of a bakery’s oven offers a fleeting promise of warmth. He eventually finds refuge beneath a massive portal supported by four stone pillars, its half‑round window casting a pale light on the snow‑covered ground. There, exhausted and shivering, he meets another group of ragged youths, each clutching their own handful of copper coins, and together they wait for the night to pass.
