Description

A moonless night cloaks the dormitory of a strict boarding school, where a handful of girls keep vigil over each other’s sleep. When a newcomer, Francine de Sor, arrives from the West Indies just before the holidays, her presence unsettles the tightly‑knit circle of classmates. The girls’ whispered accusations and reluctant apologies reveal a fragile hierarchy, as each attempts to assert dominance while fearing the judgment of Miss Ladd, their stern mistress.

Through the candid exchanges of the girls—ranging from petty jealousy over lace trims to earnest pleas for compassion—the narrative captures the sting of isolation and the yearning for acceptance in an unfamiliar world. As the new pupil’s quiet dignity clashes with the others’ petty rivalries, listeners are drawn into a vivid portrait of Victorian social expectations, the precariousness of reputation, and the surprising generosity that can emerge from the darkness of the night.
