I BUY ME COUPLE HORSES
When a good-natured man announces that he’s moving somewhere he can own a couple of horses, he has no idea how quickly the horses will find him. Soon his property is crowded with commission-selling cowboys and animals described as gentle, sound, swift, and worth every penny—claims that rarely survive a test ride. One horse eats his shirt, another spins him backward, and a supposedly youthful mount turns out to have no teeth.
Then Johnny brings him a magnificent sorrel at dusk, and for one glorious moment, the dream of owning a fine horse seems fulfilled. By morning, the horse has demolished the stable and corral, attacked everything within reach, and required an emergency phone call after being tied to an ancient oak. As more “perfect” horses are offered, the narrator’s attempts at bargaining and horse judgment become increasingly chaotic. Told in lively Western vernacular, this humorous tale follows an inexperienced buyer discovering that owning horses is far more dangerous—and expensive—than simply wishing for them.
