In the bustling train station of 1908 Budapest, the painter Girálthy steps off into a world of familiar faces and new possibilities. He reunites with his cousin Gál, a sharp‑tongued lawyer who promises lucrative portrait commissions and introduces him to a lively circle of aristocrats, officers and bohemians gathering in a hotel café. Their banter, laced with satire about the legal profession and the city's social hierarchies, sets a witty tone for the story.
The café scene crackles with animated conversation as the group, from a Hungarian hussar to an eccentric poet, sips champagne and debates art, ambition, and the fleeting pleasures of city life. Girálthy observes the fashionable women who drift through, noting their charm while feeling an undercurrent of restless yearning. As evening deepens, the eclectic acquaintances drift apart, leaving him to contemplate the precarious balance between creative pursuit and the expectations of his newfound patronage.
