Description

In the sweltering summer of 1862, two determined girls journey through the bayous of Louisiana on a single, stubborn bay horse, braving the constant shuffle of Confederate, Union and “Jayhawker” patrols just to reach the modest schoolhouse known as the Dove’s Nest. Their days are a blend of lessons, pistol practice and the ever‑present hum of cannons on the Mississippi, while the surrounding plantations reel under the strain of war. Yet the girls’ resolve never falters; they ride side‑by‑side, sharing a spur‑taught stead that carries them through mud, fire‑crackling practice shots and whispered hopes for a peaceful future.

When the school year draws to a close, the teacher arranges a bright, flower‑laden exhibition, and the girls arrive early, eager to showcase their studies. The celebration is abruptly shadowed by Union soldiers who arrive demanding a horse for a raid, testing the girls’ quick wit and fierce loyalty to the modest animal that has become their lifeline. Their tense negotiation captures a fleeting moment of courage amid the larger conflict, offering listeners a vivid glimpse of youthful bravery in a fractured South.
