The drama opens in a darkened palace where the blood‑stained aftermath of a king’s murder still hangs in the air. Clytemnestra, tormented by haunting dreams, dispatches her daughter Electra and a chorus of enslaved women to perform mournful libations at the tomb of the slain Agamemnon, hoping the ritual will appease the restless spirits. As the sisters confront the burial rites, the audience senses a growing tension between duty to the gods and the pull of familial loyalty.
Meanwhile, the exiled Orestes, urged by the oracle of Apollo, returns in secret, his mind racing with a desperate need for retribution. The chorus, moving like a tide of grief‑laden dancers, reflects the community’s fear and anticipation, echoing the moral dilemma that will drive the house of Atreus toward a tragic reckoning. The first act sets a somber stage, weaving together ritual, revenge, and the heavy weight of destiny.
