Description

In a bleak December night on Fleet Street, a thirty‑year‑old law clerk named Northcove huddles in a drafty garret of Shepherd’s Inn, his pockets empty and his future hanging by a thread. The wind whistles through icy slush, and the room is little more than a cold grate, a pipe, and a flickering lamp that offers the only respite from the darkness. Starving and desperate, he contemplates losing the roof over his head when an unexpected knock shatters his solitude.

The intruder steps into the gloom—a gaunt, rag‑clad stranger called Iggs, whose eyes betray a hunger that is both literal and philosophical. Their terse exchange sparks a precarious alliance, as the mysterious visitor’s cryptic remarks about curiosity and the nature of humanity awaken in Northcove a faint hope amid the bleakness. What begins as a chance encounter in a freezing garret hints at a larger, unsettling journey through the underbelly of Victorian society, where survival and intellect must clash with a world that seems determined to swallow them both.
