Description

A bustling Saturday morning on the Kuopio waterfront sets the stage as a fleet of steamers prepares for departure. Among the crowd, a freshly graduated student named Antti stands with his family, his crisp cap and new coat marking the start of his journey toward university life in Helsinki. The scene hums with the clatter of carts, the shouts of workers, and the rhythmic toll of ship bells, all underscoring the mix of excitement and nervous anticipation that comes with leaving home.

Antti’s restless mind flits between the familiar faces of his parents and sisters and the unknown world that awaits across the water. His mother’s gentle urging and his father’s quiet satisfaction reveal a family both proud and protective, while Antti struggles with impatience and a lingering sense of unease. As the great vessel “Elias Lönnrot” churns toward the horizon, listeners are invited to share his hopes, doubts, and the vivid atmosphere of early‑twentieth‑century travel before the story truly unfolds.
