Earth is overcrowded, wracked by famine, disease, and the threat of another devastating war. Into this crisis comes an enigmatic visitor from Mars, whose medical advances quickly eliminate several deadly illnesses—and whose objective analysis leads him to a horrifying conclusion: humanity’s population must be cut in half if civilization is to survive.

When the visitor presents his plan to three government officials, they must confront an impossible choice between immediate sacrifice and generations of suffering. Their reluctant vote sets in motion a chilling experiment in social engineering, leaving the survivors to face a transformed world with food, space, and peace—but at a terrible cost. Darkly satirical and briskly told, this classic science-fiction story explores population control, political responsibility, and the danger of accepting a solution simply because it is efficient.
