Description

Set against the gentle hills of Sussex, the modest Dashwood family has long lived on the sprawling Norland Park estate. When the elderly owner dies, his will leaves the property to his nephew, Henry Dashwood, while the widowed mother and her three daughters must confront an uncertain future. The opening chapters introduce a household marked by affection, propriety, and the looming tension of inheritance law.

Into this fragile world step the two sisters, Elinor and Marianne, whose differing natures embody the novel’s title. Elinor’s calm prudence guides her through social expectations, while Marianne’s passionate spirit rushes headlong into romance. Austen’s keen observation of class, manners, and the limited options for women shines through witty dialogue and delicate irony, offering listeners a vivid portrait of early‑modern England.

The translation by G. van Uildriks captures Austen’s subtle humor and the rhythm of the original prose, making the story accessible to modern ears. Listeners will find themselves drawn into the Dashwoods’ hopes and anxieties, a timeless exploration of love, duty, and social constraint.

Jane Austen

1775–1817

Wry, observant, and quietly radical, these novels turned the small dramas of family life, money, and marriage into enduring literature. Her six completed books still feel fresh because they understand people so well.
