Description

On a bright May morning a ten‑year‑old boy wakes to his birthday, eager for the surprise his mother has promised—a visit to his Aunt Mrs. Ward’s parsonage. The kindly aunt, a former missionary’s daughter, greets him with a friendly Newfoundland dog and a secret promise that a pup will soon belong to him. Their day begins with a walk through the village, tea, and the anticipation of stories about distant lands.

Mrs. Ward’s stories weave together the rugged coasts of Newfoundland, daring sea voyages, and the clever lineage of the dog she calls Boxa. As the children gather on the green, listening to a street musician and his playful monkey, George imagines the far‑off fishing villages his grandfather once tended. The promise of hearing about missionary journeys and the dog’s heroic ancestors keeps the birthday celebration bright and full of wonder.
